What We Do

Flags on Main Street

Beautiful sunny day on Main Street. The light post has a large hanging basket with green and red flowers, and American flags line Main Street's sidewalks.
Flags on Main Street

Rain or shine, our club members line Main Street with over 150 American flags on nine U.S. holidays throughout the year.

Annual First Responders Appreciation Day

Started during the Pandemic, when our local heroes faced even more danger, it has evolved into a cherished February tradition in which we visit each of the fire and police stations in Ferndale to express our gratitude by bringing heaping baskets of treats.

Annual Free Fishing Derby for Youth 15 and Under

For decades, the opening day for fishing at Silver Lake means our annual Free Youth Fishing Derby and breakfast. Youth 15 and under come to fish and win great prizes.

Annual Senior Citizens’ Valentine’s Luncheon

Another decades-long tradition. Our club pulls out all the stops to treat and honor the elders in our community with a free turkey-and-all-the-trimmings luncheon and concert. We partner with local schools to provide heartwarming interactions between our seniors and eager young volunteers.

      Third Grade Dictionary Program

A group of third-grade students and Ferndale Kiwanis Club members are sitting on riser benches, holding up their new dictionaries.

We partner with local businesses to gift every third-grade student in the Ferndale School District their own fantastic dictionary, complete with a resource guide and the longest word in English.

      Student of the Month

An absolute highlight for our club as we meet an outstanding senior from Ferndale High School to learn about their journey and future plans.

Scholarships for Ferndale High School Students

Every year, our club awards three scholarships to graduating students from Ferndale High School.

      The Annual Turkey Trot

Originally hosted by the Cool family, the Ferndale Kiwanis Club took it over in 2022. The Turkey Trot is a 5K fun run, held on Thanksgiving morning, in Ferndale, by donation. All donations/proceeds go back into the community.

      Support Local Community Nonprofits

We support many of our local nonprofits by volunteering our time, donations, and drives. Some of the nonprofits we work with are the Community Resource Center, Ferndale Food Bank, and Wild Bird Charity.

      Fundraising and Biz4Kidz

In partnership with VanWingerden, we run two main fundraisers each year. In the spring, we take online orders and sell vouchers for 12″ hanging baskets and 14″ color bowls. At the end of the fall, we take online orders and sell vouchers for poinsettias in different varieties and sizes, as well as centerpieces and wreaths.

Biz4Kids is a unique fundraising initiative that invites local businesses to partner with us to support programs such as the third-grade dictionary program and scholarships for Ferndale High School students.
